Decommissioning of wind turbines
A wind turbine has a planned usage life of approximately 20 years.
After this time the system must be removed, disposed of, and the site
has to be restored to its original state.
The cost of dismantling has to be saved during the systems lifetime in order to ensure decommissioning. These conditions are usually mentioned in the building permit. In some states, the decommissioning costs must be covered by a guarantee already at the project’s start.
The wind turbine is dismantled using a crane and transported piece by piece, then the electrical infrastructure is dismantled. Finally, the foundation must be removed, but possibly only to a depth that enables agricultural use.
